Fixed Drumheller

I got a lot of complaints about the video not working and stuff, so here's a fix, including Google Maps integration(!). I'm still working on what the best way to use maps for the long trip is, and I'm going to make a poll, I think (so if you care that much, stay tuned, it'sa comin').

Anyway, without further adeu, here's Drumheller Madness (and here's to hoping that it works):

Update: I forgot to say that I have no idea if this will work if this is in your inbox, you may have to go to the site directly if you don't see the map. Also, to see the video, click the icon over Drumheller Fountain.

Thanks Team

So I just thought of this as I was shooting him an email, but I wanted to shout out to my dad real quick (sorry Mom, you're going to have to trudge through this one).

Today I (Dad) bought my plane tickets for Europe. I had a great talk with Chris Guillebeau, un ami de mon cours de francais pendant ma premiere an a l'universite de washington. He is a seasoned traveler and has a great blog going on with a cool project (shameless plug: http://chrisguillebeau.com/3x5/). Check it out, it's worth a read, and stay updated with it if you'd like, he's got some cool stuff coming up.

Anyway, the trip is as follows:
July 24th I leave Seattle
July 25th I arrive in London
-Three hours later I arrive in Stockholm.
July 29th I arrive back in London
August 1st I arrive in Paris (for the schoolin')

I don't remember the dates exactly, but Dad has cashed in his airline miles to visit me for I believe two weeks in Paris, he is still trying to shuffle the dates maybe, we'll see what ends up happening there, but hopefully we'll hit up le sud (southern) France and go to the beaches and such. Who knows, right?

September 2nd I return a les etats unis (USAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA) safe and sound.

Whlie in Paris I will be in classes from 9-5, four days a week, and plan to spend my weekends checking out other cities in Paris, or taking commuter jets to other countries (<$50 each way to Amsterdam, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, etc.), and do other fun stuff. You saw the bold there, right?

fun (italics on that one too, it's for emphasis).

Anyway, Dad has been very, very supportive of my europe trip plans, and even though my financial aid (hopefully) will cover the balance of the trip, when it has come to adventures like this (he also offered to help me with some boots/gloves for my moto-venture), he is usually very supportive, and even if he doesn't think it' s a good idea, or thinks that I might be digging myself a hole, he never tries to stop me, and tries to wear a smile throughout. Thanks Dad, I really appreciate your help in everything, I'll order you a G&T for old-times sake when you land.

While Dad is helping me out with the safety stuff on the moto-venture, I think that it is totally fair to throw in that my Mom is loaning me a sleeping bag and shelter on my trip, and I appreciate that quite a bit as well.

Pretty much I just want to thank the family for helping me out with all of my endeavors. I never thought that I'd be in a situation where I'd have to stop for shelter on my motorbike, or need airfare help au Paris, but you all are there for me whenever I need you. Mad Props.

In your honor, here are some pictures that I have of you that perhaps you've forgotten about:

'Thanks guys,

Old news

So I have little terribly exciting to report, I have been trying to keep my posts about stuff pertaining to my original focus (mostly events, DV and photo-driven), and given just how hectic life is, I'm unable to report on things in a timely manner. That being said, here's a short video (read: not really edited) of our happenings this past weekend (including of course, why I don't interview Shiree often):

video
I have been posting events that were more recent already, so things are a little out of order, I just haven't had time to do things the way that I really wanted to. I finally figured out the best geotagging solution, and posting the link like I did last time definately isn't it. If you're into that kind of stuff, look forward to it, otherwise, just ignore me.

I guess my last piece is that my moto-venture is about two weeks away, and it's finally starting to dawn on me just what I'm going to have to do (DV and photo-wise) to keep up both on the trip and in my work (cette blog), so we'll see how that goes. I found out that I have a "surprise" final the last tiem slot available of finals week, so unless I can move it, I'll be two days delayed behind Collin, which will not be fun trying to play catchup through (and as a byproduct, not fun trying to keep up any kind of posting).

I have really not said much in this post, my apologies, but it's a long night and this last week.5 is just insane, so I'll see if I can think of some more interesting things to do. I'm tired and am just starting to realize how crazae tomorrow is going to be.

'night all,

GAH, last post-(ish?) for tonight!

I meant to put up this video with the last post (if you're using gmail or the like you may not see the video, hit up the site directly notjoelshapiro.blogspot.com) :

video

Basically this is just a video of Olson trying to scew my GPS data, which you can't really see yet, but if you watch the actual tracking from my GPS-dealy, there is a part where it goes around in circles outside of Mary Gates hall. That is what you are watching now (perhaps past/future-tense)

Testing of GEOTAGGING Stuffs

So for the upcoming motoventure/europe trip I have been planning on doing a lot of geotagging, so here is the first attempt at sharing the trip. On my computer I can see the entire route that I took, and I might be able to upload it as a Google Earth file, but I'm not sure yet. Anyways, here is the past few days, with the GPS tags (not entirely acurate) for where I was when the picture was taken.

Shiree's brifday goes to show that my friends prefer her to me

Check out my horrible attempt at a panorama. Shiree is getting more presents today than I've gotten in the past four years.

Just a little guy

So I dont' have a lot to report on really, so this'll be a short guy.

The other day i was looking for a tripod to put on my motorbike so I can do some video whilst riding about on my upcoming trip, so I did some googl'ing. I found a cheap mini-tripod ($4.99 plus shipping) and it just showed up today. This thing is so incredibly small, i can't believe it. Take a gander:

So now the goal is to affix the tripod to my motorbike when I get it back, but until then, I'll just play with it, maybe see what kinds of cool shots I can get with it. I'm sure the X of you watching this will see it before anyone else. w00t.

All that I've got left is a video fo Corey Allen making a fool of himself. Don't ask the condition he was in when this went down, I just couldn't resist putting it together. Just a quick upload on those grounds, and if you're getting this in your email, hit up the actual site to see it.

Werk

I just thought that in today's update (as I really don't have the time to put anything else up) I'd give you something light. I am at work, and about to go home, but for those of you (the few of you) who haven't yet graced the Daily in all of its glory, here are a few pictures of where I call home for far too much of my "spare" time.

I have adopted this empty desk, since us video folk'll have a separate little office that is all kinds of antisocial, and beside my lappy is my boss Katie (who declares that this is"a terrible picture," followed by "I hate you so much right now!"), another videographer who hates sitting in that tiny little office all by her lonesome.

That is a designer laying out some page. I don't know his name, he's here a lot, but we don't really talk much.

That is Whitney, she is a designer, ex-Photoeditor, and now another HuskyCast videographer. She only does design one or two nights a week. We also went to NYC together last quarter. She's a neat lass.

Anyway....

This last picture is where we corral (sp) the photographers. Tonight is a pretty slow night and as I write this there are two of them filtering about, but when that was taken it was a ghost town over thurr. The photo editor this quarter is John McSomething, he's a cool guy and a fellow Thinkpad user. All of the walls here are are full of quotes and the rule for getting one up is:
1) It has to be a good quote.
2) Two people have to have heard it being said.
3) You cannot write it yourself.
4) Profit!
So there you have it, a tour of my office so to speak. I thought about doing this tonight as I was trying to think of a reason not to go back home and do some hw before a test tomorrow, and I was threatening to kill the Managing Editor (Erin) who attempted to steal (voler, in french) my desk.
That being said, I am going to go home and start reviewing, I really don't want to faily ma francais demain (yeah, check that fransez). Also, congratulations to Tasha Rasmussen (sister of the everpresent Josh the Mormon), the latest subscriber to my blog. May she always regret her "decision."

Just another (extra)Ordinary tuesday

Get the catchy title? It's really subtle....and deep....get it....yeah.

So I had some leftover footage from last week, so I have thrown that together right-quick with some other more recent stuff, the most important of which is an insightful piece on my work.
The first scene of this sequence is from a video that I just fnished yesterday ( http://thedaily.washington.edu/video/2008/5/20/2008-seattle-cheese-festival/ ), but unfortunately a scene that I couldn't use. Do your best, guess why....
(please keep in mind that these video blogs are trial runs for the moto trip in a few weeks, and I have intentionally not put a lot into them, it is not a reflection of my work. Also, if you're not seeing the vide in this, hit up notjoelshapito.blogspot.com to see).

This is why we deserve the second coming. We definately do.

So I was going to do a real post, but I am so mad right now, I am just going to do this instead. How did some morons go from this (go to the site people, this probably won't show up in your email):

I am going to kill some emo-punk idiots who tried to ruin freedom. Thank god no one remembers what they tried to do to this glorious song.

First Real Video Woohoo!

So this is my first real vblog (or vlog ) post! I didn't spend much time editing this, but as I mentioned in the last post, I spent a LONG time transcoding it. This is kind of a summary of the last few days, expect one more post with the Cheese Fair, and some other stuff that I couldn't cram into this first video. It's rough, yeah, but it was fun. As videos in the past haven't gotten into people's inboxes, I suggest coming to the site ( notjoelshapiro.blogspot.com ) to see what's going on in Seattle these days.

Short Update (wow, i can't fix the formatting to save my life, sorry!)

So remember, everyone, that this blog was originally intended for while I am in Europe/on my road trip, so I have started doing the whole video thang. Unfortunately, Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 won't accept .mp4 files, which my camera records in. Thusly I have started to transcode my files, and unfortunately, I have now spent the majority of my day transcoding files only to learn that rendering them is insane. Never again will I use .wmv to work with in Premiere unless I have to. I know that you all care a lot about that, so while I am still working on the video for today that summerizes the last few days (not including the Cheese Fair that I am going to this afternoon), here are some pictures that I've taken along the way.

Consider these, friends, a teaser for the whirlwind of stuff to come.

New Updates (not now)!

So I had totally planned on putting up an update tonight, it was a big day and lots of fun stuff went down. Since I chose to watch Toy Story instead, the update'll be on tomorrow, complete with hot (hawt) new videos for ya'll entertainment. Today I don't leave you photoless though, I'll give you one of some lillies that I saw while canoeing (more on that tomorrow).

Goodnight, crew.

Vids? (and Dancing!)

So all of you that get my posts via email....you don't (unless you're Dad, aparently) get the videos. Hit up the page manually ( http://notjoelshapiro.blogspot.com ) to see them, as they usually are the most important part of my post. I'll start tagging the posts in the subject or first line for if you should hit up the page directly, since this is kinda sucky.

P.S. This post has a video attached to it. It may or may not correlate exactly to this new fancy internets thing, but I watched a few seconds of it, looked pretty interesting.

-Joel

P.P.S. I found this cool video while I was trying to find that last video, it's about dancing. (I can't embed it, so you'll have to click on it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ghtvYTdtJA

Tutti Frutti Takes a Step Down

If you woke up yesterday and told yourself "Oh man, Tutti Frutti Summer Love (pictured at the bottom) is the best thing ever. Never has there been a greater video, I devote my life to you, Gunther" You would have been likely one of the people that I know is reading this blog, but even more important than that, you would as of today be incorrect.

The title of this video is "Finally, a good use for multi-touch," and the guys that put it up are right. I don't think that I need to go into much explanation about this post, just another shining example of the good-ole' days being recreated on a (likely) 60+ inch multitouch LCD panel (retail cost over $20,000).

Props where props due, right? (And here's Gunther's Tutti Frutti Summer Love to put in perspective the evolution of awesome here.)

Camera Gurl

I'm totally talking with Camera Girl on Skype, this is great!

To give a background, Camera Girl and I met in Europe, as we had the same camera and saw each other everywhere. We chatted it up and for all intensive purposes she joined our tour group. Later that summer she flew out from Miami (home) to visit me in Tucson (hell). We had a fun time and I showed her around, but then she shipped out for a study abroad and we haven't really talked in a while.

When I was thinking about the Europe Trip I thought about contacting her again, since I know that she's always floating around Europe (addicted to the study abroads, you know), and sure enough, now this is happening. We're talking it up now and there is even the chance that we can spend like a week in Europe together hanging out instead of me dinking around by myself for a few days.

w00t! More deets when we rigure out all of this madness!

Maves is the Goatse, Case Closed.

So normally I wouldn't make a post about Goatse, but what can I say, I've been inspired. Goatsee is NSFW, let's get that out of the way (for those of you (mommy and daddy) who may not know the term, NSFW means "Not Safe For Work.") Do not Google it if you have faith in humanity, it will pain your soul. Instead, here is a wikipedia link, learn about Goatse the same way that everyone should: user-moderated encyclopedia entries

Deeper than just a post about Goatse, I guess viral marketing is on my mind. The idea that people are now being paid to leak company information and make it look like it was actually leaked. It's like the people that hire theives to break into their house, steal all their stuff, but instead of giving it back at the end of the episode, they just....well, that comparison sure did fall apart quickly.

It's weird. dig?

Tonight was interesting, nothing too big happened, but whatevs, you can't always be a rockstar, can you? Here's a video to exit with, sorry this one didn't have as much Fogerty as you might have expected after yesterday's. :(

I<3CCR4TW&LYFELOLZ

So I am procrastinating through an essay that is due far too soon and that I've done far too little on and the great Creedence Clearwater Revival started roaring through mah Zune.
Scot Rastelli got me (more) into CCR this summer, as he has a deep passion for John Fogerty, and the man was oft a subject of our daily walks to class. As much as I would love to give Un Te all the credit for my CCR obsession, I can't say that The Dude didn't play an equally large part (illustrated in the scene below), nor did my natural draw to muzak of that time period.

Anyhoo, back to the point.

Creedence is great. There is no arguing it, it's science and it's many times confirmed. My question, I guess, is this: Why aren't we getting a little mo' of Mr. Fogerty in our day-to-day? When did the world really (actively) stop listening to them? When watching a movie or listening to oldies, we can all pick and call out out one of their tracks, but why doesn't our "Working Out" playlist have a little more "Heard it through the grapevine" in it, why not a little more "Have you ever seen the rain?"

I don't want to try to get too deep with this, as pretty soon I'm going to have to say that I'm the guy that wrote an entire blog post about my lust for a band that's 30-years since broken up. Yeah, I'm that guy.

Let's just summarize and I'll throw in another video for kicks. Creedence is awesome and we all know it. We need more Creedence as a society. Everywhere. Anytime.

As promised:

God, I'm that guy.....

Fare Thee Well Fair Garrett

So Garrett spent the last few days with us, and a glorious last few days it was. He's a friend of Ryan and Sam's from Ferndale (who has hopes of transferring into UW next year). Last night he slept on the phone until about 4 in the morning.
He is truly a man's man.
This track goes out to you, Garrett.

New Bags

New bag!
So I just grabbed this here new bag at an army surplus. I needed more storage for the upcoming moto trip, and so long as it does, in fact, not:
a) burn down, or
b) fall off, it looks like it'll work pretty well.

w00t.

This Needed to Happen

I hope that was as good for you as it was for me.

First Post!

So this is my first post. Things are kinda crazy right now and there are a lot of people around, so I don't have a lot to report as it stands (had I a camera hooked up I'd link up some pictures).

I guess as I'm out of stuff to say right now I'll finishout with this:
Passing on a random number from your phonebook to someone who needs someone to drunk dial can be wildly entertaining and painful at the same time.
